Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a colorful mix of characters, and a exciting storyline including divine entities, fiends, and sinister influences growing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the first table of characters who will split off from the central cast to begin their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Considering an extensive roster, it was evident from the start that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.

This explains, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven narrative style where non-violent answers are rare.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear unsuited, but the actions of the third episode make it clear why these particular heroes are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to head next after a intense first encounter with the enemy group.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose death kicked off the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his personal gain, invading the secret base, striking Thimble, and swiping all the powerful objects to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each member has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and cautions that it is a nasty environment.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their status as prominent individuals in House Halovar could help the party access areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to The savior for his salvation and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that rule the city for a multiple motives, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and Wicander betrayed the influential house and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This results in them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in search of the traitor.

What’s Next?

From the recent installment’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to round up the Questers and Schemers groups.

Viewers can expect learning which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
