RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
